Carlisle , Cumbria (March):

This was our first invitation to Carlisle so a few of us took a flight from Stanstead to Newcastle , collected a hire car and drove the 50 miles across the country following Hadrian’s Wall . We were met by Geoff Hogdson, our host, at breakfast time in the beautiful town of Hexham and from there he took us on a scenic journey along the path of the wall stopping off at some of the forts and points of interest. As we got nearer to Carlisle Geoff had to leave us and we made out way the very short distance to Gretna Green , just over the Scottish boarder to view this magical village and its Blacksmith’s. After a night sleep we all meet up at Geoff’s dojo in Carlisle where we took a full day’s training with our new found members. The mat was full and the students keen to see what the coaches had brought them suffice to say that every one went home very happy. The evening was spent enjoying a fine meal and then onto the clubs of the city where young and older alike had a fine time, we all look forward to our next trip to ‘God’s Own Country’.

Belgium (April)

Belgium was a little different this year as we needed two coaches to take the assembled group 106 seats full to capacity and all eager to enjoy the fun and foibles of Aalst where our hotel was once again. After a night of tasting the delights of the town it was back onto the coaches and off to Dunderleau where the course was to be held.

The line up of coaches was as impressive as previous years with Kyushin Ryu providing 5 of them, Allan, Maria, Jim, Philip and Roger were there once again along with Steve and Jimmy McDade the seven English coaches made up a good part of the coach line up and all were received very well. The course went very well with the exception of a quick trip to the hospital for Rick Gaskin, however it didn’t stop him from enjoying the evening which was again in Dunderleau and was one of the best nights we have ever had, so much so we asked the drivers to delay our return to the hotel for as long as possible, which they were able to do and became friends forever, another great time in Belgium.

Presentation Night (July)

Our 32 nd Presentation night was as good as they can be, members, families and friends gathered at the King Charles hotel for the annual bash which began with a meal before the presentation got under way. These were to members nominated by their Club Coaches and those who had made a special contribution to the association over the previous year

This included a new trophy which was donated by Bob Martin for sportsmanship, The Bob Martin Honorary Trophy will be presented each year to the person within the club who has shown the best spirit in assisting others achieve their goals, this year and the first recipient was Rachelle Walsh from the Sheppey club. The “Bushido Award” went to Carla Ebers from the Lordswood club and the “Jude Silva Netto Award” to Lee Jarmyn from the Dartford club. Presentation were made to the Club Coaches which were goblets and tankards and the evening was handed over to “Stuart” our favourite DJ who led the evenings festivities until the early hours.

West Sussex (August)

Although not strictly an international we were invited to Bognor Regis for a weekend in August where our Kyushin Ryu colleagues were giving a series of displays at the famous “Bird Man” weekend. The Bognor Bird Man is a weekend where all comers from all over the world attempt to jump off of Bognor Pier and fly 150 metres out over the sea before crashing into it.
So famous is the event that Sir Richard Branson took part and not to be out done Sensei Sid Martin, our senior coach in West Sussex , did it as well. Suffice to say that Sid is much better at Ju Jitsu than he is at flying but all credit to him he did make a very creditable 35 metres…... vertically. The displays were excellent and the clubs in West Sussex have entered into their organisation in a very effective manner, membership applications are growing as is the success of the group a very good weekend with a great group of friends.

Hungary (September)

Ten of us took the early morning flight from Gatwick to Budapest for our forth visit to this beautiful eastern European city and our hosts were as always there ready and waiting to collect us. We have stayed just outside of the city during the past three visits but this year we were in a hotel right in the centre where we were able to roam to our hearts content. The course was to be on the Sunday so we had a couple of days in which to sight see and although we had been to the city before there is still so much to see.

We were joined by 10 of our colleagues from Belgium and the days and evening were spent looking around and catching up. The course on Sunday carried a surprise for Laszlo our host had a case of hand guns for his session and the looks on members faces when these were given to them was most amusing for the rest of us. As always the course was hard and fast, which is the way that the Hungarians train but still very enjoyable it was a pleasure to be in their country with them. That evening we were treated to a meal on board a river cruiser while gently meandering down the River Danube.

The following day, our last was spent at one of the cities very relaxing natural hot spring baths, a wonderful finish to another memorable stay in a wonderful country.

England (October)

Our turn to host our friends from overseas, the first to arrive were the Hungarians flying into Luton just a few day before the course which allowed them to spend some time in London. Friday saw the main body arrive from Denmark , Belgium , Holland and the rest of the UK , cars coaches and minibuses collected them and many spent a few hours strolling around Maidstone before making their way to Gillingham and the hotel. After a meal it was off to the “Blues Rock Café” at Gillingham ’s Priestfields Stadium where we were being hosted for the night by the management. Saturday was the course and as the several hundred prepared to train the coaches lined up ready, from 9 th. Dan to 4 th. Dan. 11 coaches in all working separately in two groups kept the members working throughout the day.Geoff came down from Carlisle , Jimmy and Steve McDade, form Hert’s, Jorn Johannson from Essex along with our friends from Belgium and Hungary .

All to soon it was time for the course to stop but not for the day to end as Maria Friend and her team from our association and Tom De Jaeger from Belgium gave two brilliant displays of Naginata, Iadio and Jodo. The buses ferried everyone back to the hotel where they had a few hours before the evening festivities took place, we were in the ‘Legends’ night club where the evening took off again and the general contentious was that this was the best yet, we know that many will return even if they don’t stop smiling.

Another great year and we’re sure there and many to follow.
